Looks like the stator has packed it in on the Daytona. Been having issues with electronics for a little while, and it failed one of the tests I did on it over the weekend.

I'll need to pull it off and have a look to be 100%, but in the meantime, does anybody know who does stator re-winding in/around Canberra? Preferably someone northside, but I'm not too fussy.

    Thanks!

I know Moto Garage sorted out a VFR one, not entirely sure if it was a local repair or sent away job though.

No idea. I'll have a look.

EDIT: Ricks has it listed for USD$140 plus shipping. Will see how much it is to get re-wound

what tests did you do to determine it was "Cactus"?

Not too many you can do, check the VAC while its running, check the resistance, and check if its shorted/grounded.

VAC seemed OK, didn't test resistance, but it's shorted/grounded.

They are notorious for doing stators so I reckon you will be on the money with your assessment

I tested it with a multimeter. Disconnected it from the reg/rec, set multimeter to ohms, put one lead to to any pin on the connector, the other to the engine earth point. No resistance = short/ground, which is what I got.

Yeah, exactly. It had been done previously, but I don't know when, or who by. Any ideas @Maree or @Gabe80 or anyone else who owned it??

What exact resistance did you get between one phase and ground? Also useful to check resistance between phases.

No resistance at all between phases, or between a single phase and ground.

Yeah totally broken down varnish/insulation stuff then for sure.

Only reason why I get people to check is that a working one only has a couple of ohms of resistance between phases as well, and sometimes just a single phase goes.

(They can also fail such that you have infinite resistance on a phase, too, so it can go either way).

Wasn't something I had done. Pretty sure it was the regulator rectifier that I had replaced.

It was done by tim, the guy I bought it off. Roughly 3 or 4 years?
Should be somewhere in the massive pile of paperwork I handed onto Maree.

Sweet, thanks for the info gabe!

The TT600 series bikes (TT600, Speed Four, Daytona 600 and 650) are renowned for doing stators, and reg/recs. Changing the reg/rec extends the life of the stator somewhat, but that's it.

I've done a bit of research, and will be replacing the reg/rec with one from a 2015 DL1000. These units are better suited to the charging system, and should extent it's life somewhat, even compared to the R1 reg/rec it currently has.

To put aside any notion that it may not be stator related, please see below :(
