Do any of your guys or gals have one of these Skull helmets? I'm curious to see if they live up to the advertising (on their web site). Are they any good?

    http://www.skully.com/

I like the idea of these for sure but don't know if they're compliant here in Oz.

I looked at the site and still don't know what the fuss is about. It's a no name helmet promoted with slow mo video.

I'm keeping an open mind about this one as it is only new (started development in 2010, apparently), and will follow its evolution with interest.

Up until the point when I actually get rear-ended at a set of lights I will continue to believe that these are a waste of time/money and a potentially dangerous distraction...

And as I tend to watch my mirrors like a hawk when I'm stopped at lights I can't see it being too likely that it'll happen any time soon.

When in motion, the only things close behind me are those I've just passed and they're disappearing at a great rate of knots so no point looking at them :p

    $1,499 US ...:59.gif: with very vague details . It's a Gimmic.

I can't really see you getting much detail on a tiny screen / hologram projected on a visor. Your eyes aren't going to able to focus on the display and what's in front or around you at the same time. It's no more effective than a mirror.

It would be better holograming your dash tell-tales on the visor which only needs a quick glimpse and not a tiny moving picture you have to focus on.

not all states yet and it's now more confusing as there are 13 different types of helmet approval stickers and Australian shops can only legally sell Aus standard helmets. So much for reducing government red tape as they have just added extra layers .

That link says Skully helemts will be available in Australia (but really only sort of) as they aren't going for Aus standards only ECE so you will have to import the helmet if you want one and take a chance it fits.
Skully want your Australian money but don't want to bear any costs to take it.

HUD is a fairly new technology for motor vehicles in general, and I don't think the industry has the R & D dollars to produce something akin to what the military use (just spit-balling here).

I agree, mirrors are still the best (but not perfect) solution, for now. Still, if/when/maybe they come to Australia, I'll be curious to see what they're like, and see what reviewers have to say about them.

A descent reversing camera & display mounted on your bikes tail & dash would be equally effective and significantly cheaper

Not true. The law that stopped Australian retailers selling anything besides AS/NZ helmets was repealed just before NSW and ACT changed their laws to allow ECE 22 approved helmets.

True. But I guess that there's a balance to be struck between looking at gauges/screens etc, and scanning the traffic etc. At StayUpright, they say that if you're not checking mirrors every 5 seconds, then you're not checking them enough. I don't know about anyone else, but the mirrors on the Ninja 300 aren't spectacular viewing, so for me, regular 'head checks' are the order of the day.

Still, it is good to see some efforts made (good and/or bad) to try and enhance safety for bikers.

Seriously though 99% of shit that's going to hurt you is going to come from in front of you. If you're checking your mirrors or head checking every 5 seconds you're wasting valuable concentration on an area that poses very little danger in most situations, with the exception of pulling up in traffic and at intersections.

I must admit, though, I have a rubbery interpretation of what 5s actually is. I think that what they're trying to instill is to be constantly vigilant of what is happening all around you, is all. I agree with you though, 99% of all the crap happens in front of you, not so much behind. I think the other 1% is all the caged drivers tailgating you - so annoying!

Yeah, driving schools drill the mirror-checking idea into you as well, because otherwise people fail to make any kind of habit out of it and then never check them. It's more about situational awareness than just looking behind for the hell of it.
