    Hi!

I know its not motorcycle related but thought itd be a good place to ask!

To cut a long story short. I'm looking to do casual work through an abn after normal working hours for a bit of extra money but I have no idea how any of it works. I've done some research but it kind of raises more questions than answers, as to what I'm trying to achieve.

Was hoping I could shout someone a few beers to pick their brains about a kind of rough idea of how to do something like this, as in invoicing, tax, gst, and possibility of out sourcing some of the work and the legality of it.

Any feedback will be most welcomed!

    Cheers,
    Dan

    Have you read through this?

    http://www.business.gov.au/business-topics/starting-a-business/Pages/default.aspx

An option for advice is the Canberra Business Chamber
    http://www.canberrabusiness.com/business-support-programs/canberra-businesspoint/

They may be able to direct you to free/low cost seminars etc for people looking to start a new business.

Re legal issues, Uni of Canberra runs a free legal advice clinic for small businesses:

I've read through the first link. It's pretty comprehensive but still kind of creates more questions than answers.

Haven't seen the others that's great to know. I'll have a look thanks for that!

Those couple of links are actually fantastic! I think CBC will be my first point of call. That's exactly what I was looking for.
If they can't answer the questions regarding legality I'll go to the legal advice clinic.

    Thanks heaps AshJay!

If you have questions about the content at the first link, write them down.

Once you are clear on what bits you are unsure about, then call orgs like the Chamber or somewhere like:
    http://srbec.com.au/

You'll get more benefit from your time talking to them, and get more bang for your buck (some business orgs charge an annual fee, but offer training, seminars and advice in return).

Alternatively, write up your list of questions and pay for an hour or two of an accountant's time.

Some banks also provide small business services (they want you as a customer) eg:
    http://www.businessready.anz.com/
    Or

My advice is to start to develop a relationship with a good accountant. If you're only doing a small amount of work through your abn its relatively simple and an accountant will be able to run you through your obligations fairly quickly. Have you thought about the need for professional indemnity insurance?

Hmm no. That's the sort of thing I'm hoping to run through with someone. It looks like I'll have to go pay for an accountant for some advice.
