Jobs was never the tech guy, but he knew how to bring it into a package that people (mostly) wanted.
They didn't invent the GUI, but they were the first to package it into a product that people wanted.
They didn't invent the smartphone, but they were the first to make one that regular people wanted.
They didn't invent the mp3 player etc..

I love Android, but I doubt Android would be where it is today without Apple leading the way.

Likewise, iOS would not be as good without Android...

I think we could all agree though that the world would be a much better place if these pricks just stopped launching frivolous law suits against each other!

Great points, but the sad truth is, it is usually one guy who gets the glory.

Will Wozniak get the same level of respect when he croaks? Ditto for Allen cf. Gates.

Do the mainstream even know who Allen and Wozniak are and why they were instrumental to everything?

Although the technical stuff in the Microsoft situation is a bit more blurred since they have never agreed on who did what.

Sorry, probably leading this way off topic.

Forgot to mention before, RIP Steve Jobs.

Woz gets a lot of nerd respect, but neither he nor Allen have done much of note in the last two decades since leaving the companies they co-founded.

"After resuming control of Apple in 1997, Jobs eliminated all corporate philanthropy programs. " - wikipedia.

Compare this to Gates. Then have a think about who's being remembered as a saint, and who'll be remembered at a corporate tycoon.

It's one thing to give about buttloads of cash when it's rolling in.

No point killing the company to keep the philanthropy going. Better off killing it off then picking it up later.

He never re-instated any philanthropic efforts.

Tho original source. A worthwhile read. Seems he also understated stock to dodge tax, and claimed he was sterile so he didn't have to pay welfare....

That was actually a good read. Yes, he did lots of fantastic things for the nerdworthy (lol) - but as is common with all deaths of important people - at the moment, everyone only remembers the great things he did - not the shitty things. And there were lots of those. All that stuff is yet to come.

I'm sure Jobs was no saint, however, his impact on lives is beyond contestation.

1984 - I remember as a teenager, gawking at the Apple Mac, resplendant with it's GUI. I'd only ever seen computers which could draw a few lines, or put text on the page. All the commands were typed in. This thing - you clicked on pictures to do things. Amazing. It's single floppy drive help a whopping 720k, and it was standard with 256kb of RAM!

It was the design that changed things. And it was the designs from Jobs' concepts. Apple beat everyone to a useable GUI.

Jobs was simply a visionary. He saw that things could be different to what they were. He could see how technology could change lives. As part of his autocratic style, he could also have things done very quickly and precisely as he wanted.

Sure he failed too - the Apple Mac portable, the Apple Lisa, neXt Computing - flops. Sometimes our biggest lessons come from when we fail - and Jobs certainly picked up and carried on.

I think, at the end of the day, Jobs was an eccentric. For that he will be both praised and vilified. Say what you like, he has been a massive inspiration, he has changed billions of lives, and he has had incredible influence over computers, consumer and telecommunications technology as well as the content of many of our films and the film industry as a whole.

Pretty sure no one will say that about any of us when our achievements are remembered.

He had the vision to give Pixar a go way back when. Now look at them. Thanks Steve, RIP.
