HDD on PC Died, recommendation of who to talk to?

    The HDD on an old PC died, looking to salvage what I can from the drive and possible do a upgrade. Would much appreciate any recommendations.

    Describe 'died'.

    Google can be your friend on this - don't make the mistake of just throwing money at an 'expert' to fix the 'problem'. Unless you genuinely need the platters removed and scanned in a cleanbox (which costs hundreds), most data salvage can be done at home. Lots of free recovery software out there on the net.

    I'm guessing windows? Any experience with Linux? Lots of option there in terms of livecds and imaging utilities.

    On this machine I run windows XP
    This is an old machine probably around 7 yrs, on 24/7 as a weather station.
    CMOS runs to boot then requests CD/Drive.
    Based on previous experience the HDD is not working.
    Really looking to salvage any data, some backed up but as usual not all.
    probably build a new basic machine to take its place.
