Ive got a '14 cbr1000rr with about 9000 kms and I've just started to notice a ticking noise. At this stage I can only seem to hear it in 4th gear at about 4000-5000rpm and just slightly on takeoff from a standstill. I thought maybe CCT but I don't hear anything in neutral, would you normally hear the tick in neutral if it's CCT.

Also maybe worth noting I first heard it after filling up the tank, so my other thought was bad fuel maybe, but I feel like if it was that you would probably hear it across the rev range.

I've heard that some bikes can get a slight ticking from the CCT before it clicks out another notch and tightens the chain up again.

But there are a hundred things that can make noise on a bike. One example is when I had this rattling noise on my track bike at 8k rpm. I thought it was timing chain or something. Turned out one of my air-ram mounts had undone it's bolt and was hanging loose. It just so happend that at 8k rpm it started rattling around and making noise :p

So check for loose shit first before assuming the worst.

Yea I've been looking through fairing stays/bolts apparently the windscreens can vibrate around a lot too. It does definitely sound mechanical how ever. Like a handful of shims in a tin can being knocked around.

Is it a real rattle or just a tick? You can't confuse a CCT for much. Sounds like a bucket full of loose bolts being shaken at about those RPM. Many bikes have quite a distinct 'tick'. R6's seem to have a very audible one compared to most bikes but can't say I've noticed one on CBR's. Don't know if Mr CBR @trezza has noticed it on any of the 15 CBR1000rr's he's owned? :p

I feel I would have noticed it if it was just an engine characteristic . Best way I can describe it, is if you've ever heard a bike up on a rear stand in 1st gear and running and that chain is just a fraction too loose. You can just hear the chain slapping between the underside on the swingarm. That's exactly what it sounds like. Which is what I had imagined a CCT would sound like once it's time is up.

If it was CCT it should occur at the same RPM in every gear as it's before the gearbox. On the blackbird you could feel the vibration right through the bike as well. Does the bike being hot or cold affect it? If it only happens when cold the CCT could be hydraulic and is still building up pressure.

Do the CBR1000rr's have flapper valves in the exhaust? They can make a very similar noise and vibration when their fucking up

Hot or cold seems to make no difference, I did notice it once in 3rd gear yesterday, but it mainly seems to be in 4th. As most 1000rr it was an exhaust flapper that is currently permanently open as the servo has been disabled.

Sounds like it's pinking as you said it started after you fuelled up.

Not to sure what "Pinking" is, but it seems it was bad fuel which is a shame as I use that servo a lot. Just went a filled up the tank and after 5 minuets the sound has disappeared. Much to my delight, no needed trip to the mechanics.

Pinking is detonation which can be cause from bad fuel, low octane fuel etc. Extended detonation wrecks engines not covered by warranty.

Right, makes sense. So what's is it that's causing the noise? as it sounds very metallic

Pre-ignition due to the fuel being low octane :). The other search term (more American) would be pinging; same thing. It's internal to the engine - basically the petrol is burning before it is meant to, and it makes a weird noise as it uncontrollably detonates.

It's worse under load (which are higherish gears at lowish throttle) and it also depends on the ignition advance mapping... so, yeah, you start with different fuel (a 98 RON fuel, too, so you have as much octane as you're gonna get at the pump, e.g. BP Ultimate, Vortex 98 etc).

'pinking' is the pommie term - never really liked it that much, 'pinging' is far better ;)

on my RD350, it sounded like rattling ball-bearings in a tin can. Poor fuel not the problem in that case, it was poor ignition timing (too much advance).

I don't mind either, it (especially in cars, but in some bikes with more stuff in the way) really does sound like someone saying the word pink over and over really fast.

Gotcha...no more fuel from there then. I'd hate to see what happens if you put E10 in.
    Thanks gents.

If it doesn't clear up after a tank or two, then it might be something else. But yeah, could well be that and it's a pretty simple thing to check.

I am pretty sure that 91 octane and 98 octane have different colour dyes ??
