Hi all, I'm looking at the potential of coming to a much colder part of the country and will of course be bringing my bike with me.

I've got a 2006 ZX12 at the moment which I bought back in 2008 and I think it's one of the sexiest bikes to have ever been produced but as I've gotten out of my "how fast can I go" stage, I'm not a lot more interested in going off road as much as riding it to work etc...

I have been looking at a BMW R1200GS, they seem to be the mack daddy of on/off road bikes and I might try to do a swap or sell mine and get something like that before I come up there. Can anyone vouch / not vouch for this model for Canberra conditions?

I don't know how often / how much the roads snow up over there but I've never ridden in the snow before and I imagine it would be fairly hairy, particularly on the ZX12?

I've also heard that the public transport isn't quite what it is in other states and that parking in the city is hard to come by, so I'm hoping that just using the bike may alleviate some of those issues.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to any comments.

    Cheers!

Welcome to the forum. I know a couple of guys who ride 1200gsa's and love them. They both do alot of good long distance rides on and off the black top. They are perfectly fine bikes for Canberra conditions. Yes it will get cold but snow is very irregular until you start riding up in the high country through the Brindabella mountains and into Namadgi national park. I am certain most if not all beemer adv bikes have decent screens and heated hand grips so you'll be right if you do get one. In the meantime get some good cold weather gear and some thermals so your sack doesn't freeze to your tank.

Public transport leaves alot to be desired. Moto parking is free though and there is good availability for it in the town centers mostly.

    Good luck!

Thanks very much guys, I'll definitely look into some warmer riding gear. It's also good to know that it doesn't snow too much around the city, and that parking is free, that's a huge bonus! Do you guys have some kind of monthly or scheduled meet up? Hopefully I'll be able to swing past and say hello.

    Cheers
