    Hi all,

My laptop was working fine, then one day it did this:

Do what the message says, then the same message pops up again.

I was told to run a test of the CD's I got with it, but who knows what they are.

Anyone dealt with this before willing to help a CR'er out?

This should help you out - I would try rebooting in safe mode to start (instructions at the bottom of the page) then see how you go

The message “You need to restart your computer” indicates that an error known as a “kernel panic” occurred. The most likely cause is a software problem. A kernel panic can also be caused by damaged or incompatible hardware, including external devices attached to your computer.

Hmm. Seems I have a "reoccurring kernel panic"

Need the CD's to troubleshoot further, Safe Mode doesn't work...

I dunno, it was OS X.

Try clearing the Kernal panic first

Option-Command-P-R till you hear the startup chime. May work straight AWAY!! and then if it boots go to your utilities and verify the disc and repair permissions.

    If that doesn't work

Restart it and hold D during the startup. Its the hardware test screen. If that goes well may be a simple permission error.

If it passes the hardware test but still "Freaks out" put your OSX boot disc in. Hold C during boot and run the permission repair/verify disc from the utilities menu.

The sequence above I use at work and it finds the main issues most of the time.

I didn't follow the above links, apologies if this has been covered.

RAM or hard disc fault can be repaired by Apple in the City store or anyone handy with google:)

I wanted to be a Mac tech ever since I was invited to the OSX pre-release event in early 2000something and they had all you could eat pizza and drinks. It was the best IT event I have ever attended.

I had my first crash in 4 years on My MBP last night. It was a corrupt file or something following the update to Maverics. Lucky i backed up once the install was complete. I was able to use the last backup to get in and fix the problem. Given it was my first experience with the Mac, i was impressed at how simple it was to fix. Either im very lucky, or some things are better on Mac.

Mavericks has cause all kinds of Havoc at work with our OSX COE. Mind you, my 'hand installed' OS upgraded without a hitch....

This thread can be closed I think. It was a bad logic board apparently.
