So after reading about the massive firmware and reliability issues with the new Hero 3's, I'm looking at alternatives.

The current frontrunner is the Drift HD Ghost, and the close runner up, the Contour +2.

Does anyone here have any experience with these units, or any other alternatives they'd recommend?

Not interested in hearing any "Just buy a GoPro every1 knows its best" or other consumerist rubbish based on nothing more than brand name recognition. I'm well aware the Hero3 has the highest resolution/frame-rate specs, but with negative reviews currently outnumbering the positive, but theres no point being able to record in 4K if it doesn't actually work. Mind you, if you have a working Hero3 Black, or have had experiences with these problems, I'd like to hear about it.

My hero3 Black has been faultless, maybe I was just lucky.

Maybe have a look at Sony's new option. Similar concept to Contour, but smaller and from what I remember of the promo video I saw about 6 mobths ago, it might be worth a look ;)

Just curious, are the problems with all of them or just the black? Also on the side of the better of the cheaper ones the Liquid Image rate quite well.

I've got a drift hd170. Not bad when it works but it doesn't like the vibrations of the LC so I haven't had much luck with it in races.

Thanks folks - trezza, the Sony Action Cam was one that I've looked at too. I've read the more recent batches of factory-updated Blacks aren't as problematic. Just out of curiosity, when did you buy your Black, and have you done any firmware updates? Same to you steampunk (how've you been by the way? :) )

Bought my black late feb this year from JB HI FI. I installed an update for the wifi connectivity the day I bought it and haven't checked to see if they have new ones yet (looks like I should).

(and yeah, I'm still here. not very active in CR but I still read the threads, back at uni to finish off my industrial design degree so that eats most of my spare time. And still trying to resist the temptation to go test ride a ktm 690 enduro R.)

I got mine from the USA in Nov last year, so there goes that idea... Never updated it either *:/

I haven't bothered with using the wifi or anything yet though, I just use it the same as I did the Hero2. I'd say the remote will be more useful snowboarding than it is on motorbikes. I mostly upgraded to the Hero3 because the standard flat lens works above and below water (you used to have to get an underwater-specific flat-lens for the Hero2, and I use mine in the water quite a lot) and the increased frame rate can come in handy sometimes.

Gopro 2's have more field of view than the contour and drift, so more can be seen around you. Also the colour taste that gopro vids have are nice. But hey drifts are smaller and cheaper!

I have had both the contours and gopros and rate them both quite highly. My contour took an absolute flogging and still works. Several people on this forum have knocked it around and it kept on giving. That said the microphone is rubbish on them.

I have a gopro 2 and 3 and both are flawless. I got the 3 when they were first released from the states amd ran the update. Whole thing works like a charm.

With respect to the bad reviews I'm sure they outnumber the good ones for a simple reason. The guys with the good ones are out using them instead of posting on the net. Poor bastards with the bad ones are busy trying to solve their problems. I am yet to come across a person who has experienced the problems in real life...

I've got a Contour Roam and it does the job without giving you that certain "look" that a GoPro does :p

I vaguely remember seeing some Sony action cams out at Costco a few weeks ago.

Does that mean mine has been updated too..?
Haha
That mic was pretty bad on the Contour, even with your little mirkin you had lying around that you stuck on there... :p
Otherwise was a good option, and would be much better for helmet mounting. Gopro are horrid things to have on your helmet.

+1... The go pro seams a bit too fish eye for my liking although the older version contour I have likes to turn itself off :/ apparently the newer versions have a lock on the switch so they don't slide back and turn off in high resistance circumstances like high speeds and wind haha

Mine has been knocked around a bit and it still works perfectly... Also I like that you can mount it anyway and have the video up the right way still as you can rotate the view :)

You joke, but how do you think I got that footage of the roads in Morocco?

Actually that's a lie, I just used my hand.
