action cameras are built to take vibration, dust and water.
It's a bit expensive for a continuous DVR camera.

I've got an iOn The Game action camera, its fairly unheard of and retails at a price point similar to the GoPro and specs similarly. I picked up an unused demo model for cheap, its WiFi enabled, 1080p at 30fps and 720p at 60fps, 2.4'" screen, awesome stills.
The mounting options are not great though and since picking it up I haven't used it for anything other than test shots. Happy to let it go for cheap too if anyones still after a GoPro alternative :D

After watching a P plater on a Cruiser lane filtering this morning in Woden and then nearly dropping his/her bike over reflectors.. I have decided I REALLY want a camera to catch stupid and also how much I laugh in my helmet.
    I am thinking the Contour+2 since I can just get one from Joe's and not have to order one;
    Does anyone have one?
Reviews from those people WITH one..
the interwebs say they are splash resistant.. is this 'oh crap its raining better stop to take off my camera' or 'mah she'll be right mate'
Does it have video tagging. So if there is something important I don't want to record over.. I can tag that timeline and keep recording? I know the drift stealth does this.
Battery life true at 2.5 hours?

I appreciate your time and assistance with the above, Thank you.

Nah you can only build one yourself if you take into account the price of the individual components that make up the CCD image capturing part, so you need to include the cost of a Si fabrication clean room facility.

I have used the original contour a fair bit. Video quality was on par with the Hero2 at the time, although audio was absolutely, positively shit. Like, unusable at anything over 20km/h.

The GPS functionality was cool for top speed/lap time etc, but when they went bust and folded, the online support disappeared with it, which was a bit shit also.

I haven't looked into the newer cameras, they're all far too expensive for the infrequent use I get out of them these days. Had a Hero3 Black that I took surfing, spearfishing, snowboarding and on the bike. Footage was amazing no doubt, but the novelty wore off eventually, and the battery life was truly shit also, so I sold it. Plus I didn't use the WiFi or remote control once. Not even once. I don't think I ever bothered with FullHD either, the Hero3 wrote 2 files for every recording (one for editing purposes) so was super data-hungry. Not that it mattered with the shit battery. I'm talking half-hour of recording, tops. Apparently that was fixed for the Hero3+ though, which was brounght out as a pretty rapid update and devalued the premature Hero3 pretty badly.

I did see that little base-model Garmin unit on Catchoftheday which looked pretty good for $150. They make an upmarket GPS one with other fancy stuff too for $299. I might look into a new camera soon, the Sony Actioncam sparked my interest at first, but again very expensive for what it does.

    http://shop.gopro.com/APAC/cameras/hero/CHDHA-301-master.html $179 divide 26pays = $6.88
For what riders want out of an action camera the GoPro is heaps, and some.
This model is reasonably priced, so go and be a hero, get one..:ridgy

I have the Hero3+ with remote, bloody good stuff, the vision is superlative, and my battery life
is reasonable at 2.2hrs. As for trezza not using his remote or hifi, not trying hard enough bud.. :lol
I'm trying to save for the Extreme micro SDXC at $149.95 super fast transfer rate.
Recently I had a full load of clips on my 32Gb sandisk from my alpine trip, and it had taken
50 minutes to get off the card to the pc..
Seriously, if you can afford the extra few bucks get the Gopro, when you are watching it
on your big LG smart arse, tv you will know what I mean, its superb...
But get what you want its your money and your choice, just giving a personal non seismic view..
nothing earth shattering here..not like the chain guard..

I've got a Drift Ghost S for my helmet. Not exactly "entry level" but it does everything it does REALLY well. Pretty much shits on the GoPro in every way really.

As for GoPro style cameras, I have a knock off one by Turnigy that cost me about 110 bucks. I bought it to attach to my quadcopter which it is great for. The video and audio quality is actually not so bad and it comes with all the same accessories (waterproof housing, mounts, etc) as a for real GoPro but at like a 3rd the cost.

    See: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...P_Full_HD_Video_Camera_w_Waterproof_Case.html

There's a WiFi version too for more $$$.

The Drift Ghost HD are good, water proof without a clear case and doesn't look like a TV set stuck to your helmet. They have new small camera now , Drift stealth 2 .

Sena have a new action camera that has voice control and pairs with their bluetooth head sets so you and anyone else who's head set is connected can commentate while filming.

Thanks peeps. I checked out the Gopro. Not a fan of the square shape for helmets. Checked out the Drift Stealth 2 and LIKE it but I keep going back to the Contour+2 because of the wifi&Bluetooth&GPS, live streaming removable battery and controllable functions from app. That is why I asked if anyone actually had one, I am currently doing up a pros and cons and it is def down to the Stealth 2 or Contour+2. I need some real life feedback though before I go spending $500 on a camera that I have no real need for.

    Oh wow...
Thought I'd just found my new camera... It's perfect except only 3m waterproof. That won't do for spearfishing/freediving at all. Damn it :(
