Hi & welcome aboard.

There are some good L-plate bikes in our For Sale section - could be worth checking them out :up

Welcome! There are lots of seconds hand LAMS bikes around that won't cost an arm and a leg. I bought second hand for my first bike because I didn't know anything about riding and didn't want to spend a small fortune on something that I might only ride for the duration of my L's and P's.

Do a thread search and take a look through the Learner League section of the forum. Loads of information and opinions there :)

Depends. Are you thinking about buying a more powerful bike when you're not restricted?

If you want to buy a powerful bike when you have your full license, I suggest buying a shitty old CBR 250 or something.

If you don't, well, then there's many options! :D

    Welcome mate!

Welcome. My suggestion for a LAMS bike would be a GS500, great little bikes.

    Welcome to the forum.

I also reckon that a well-priced and looked after second-hand bike is the go.

You can get good bikes for not too much money, eg I picked up my learner 250 for $2500; it was in great nick and when I sold it didn't lose any money.

There's a good chance you'll drop it at least once.... older stuff doesn't hurt as much as new.

Personally I'm glad I learnt on a smaller bike... made it much easier, made it possible to pick up the two times I did drop it, and it made "upgrading" fun :)

Plus, you might also decide after a while that riding motorbikes is not for you. Does happen.... in fact my first bike was well priced cos that's what happened to the person I bought it from.

Yeah save money on your first bike, and spend it on good quality and comfortable safety gear... cos that will cost you a bit, too :)

As well as insurance and rego etc....

Hi and welcome to CR .. stu has the right of it. Full insurance will cover your gear as well as your bike and for my little 250 (which I'm selling) is not even $20 a month. And also any bike over 300cc is basically full price rego, whereas a bike under 300cc is only $240 a year ...

Best bet I reckon for learners is set your budget for the bike, and sit and look at allclassifieds EVERY DAY and grab one that is alright and in your price range. Keenly priced L and P bikes don't tend to hang around long, so you can snaffle bargains if you're ready to pull the trigger.
