Hey, just moved to Canberra from the uk and bought myself a gt650 (getting it on Monday)
Had a fully faired sv650s back home that i sold in order to move over and always liked the look of the naked hyosungs and its the same great reliable engine! so why not :D

It has P plates on it, does this mean it is limited at all or restricted? I have a full license and quite new to this hole system, still confused about the rego & roadworthy etc :/

I haven't properly had a look through this site but I'm assuming you have regular meets etc around Canberra and it would be good to find some nice roads - judging by the place there must be loads around here! so yeh, thought id join and say hi!

    Cheers,

look on the Compliance plate if it is a GT650L then it will be restricted, most probably is if it has P plate attached.
I think it is just a mod to the carbie to un-restrict it

Cheers, ill look into that, so is that on the registration papers then? I don't have any tools here yet i'm fresh off the boat - is it something I can do with a simple socket set?

the rego papers will tell you the model , the "L" means LAMS approved (Learner approved Motorcycle)
If I remember correctly it is a change to a slide plate in the carbie, don't know how easy it is to do , but I'm sure one of the other blokes will know how to do it.

Yes that's right, but you only have 2 weeks to transfer it to your name, is it ACT or NSW Rego ? NSW I know about not ACT.

You can ride it as long as it has rego on it - But if you take longer than 14 days to get it into your name, there will be an $80 late fee.

Ah right ok, it's on NSW Rego at the moment but I need to change it to ACT I assume as that's where I live? looking online I can't tell if that means I need to have the bike inspected or not as surely as its already got rego that is sufficient? or will ACT want there own seal of approval on it? Also the seller was telling me about some 3% sale fee thing I have to pay to the government? how do I go about doing that? It's all so much more complicated than the uk! haha

Cheers mate! Only been here a couple of weeks and figured getting a bike and joining a forum could be a decent way of getting to know a few more like minded people in the area! Canberra seems "heaps" friendly :D, this site seems pretty active too, much more posts than the uk forum I was on.

Depends where you're living - If you have proof of residence in the ACT you get ACT rego, proof of residence in NSW, you get NSW rego.

To go from NSW to ACT rego, you need to take it to Dickson to get an ID check (If the bike is less than 6 years old) and signed off at any garage to get it checked for roadworthiness. (Think of it as a MOT you only need to do once.) - I suggest Ikes Motors in Phillip for this, but everyone will have their own suggestions.

I currently have no "acceptable" proof of residence and am unable to get a 18+ age card or swap my drivers license, they're so fussy! signed letters from my work/bank/letting agent & my TFN were not good enough..Do I need this in order to transfer the bike into my name?
Ok so do I need to get the MOT and ID check done before I try and change the rego? I'm assuming these checks come with a nice fee too? I was going to ask about good garages around here - I'll give them a whirl then! Cheers, It's difficult to get definitive information about the rego and everything the website is a little confusing and assumes you understand the basics.

Yep, $45 for the ID check and about $55 for the MOT. You must do them beforehand. You get a peice of paper rom each inspection, you then take these papers with proof of residence to Canberra Connect, pay lots of money and then the bike is registered in your name. Without proof of residence, you won't be able to transfer the registration.

Brilliant, can't get proof of residency for another 2 months so going to get stung with a further $80 for the late fee then, how much is lots of money roughly? Christ i didn't factor in any of these costs before buying the bike! :/ getting hustled by the ACT.
Also what paperwork should I expect from the seller of the bike? a registration document, the current rego? and is there anything else I need? sorry to bombard you with questions pal!
