Came across this and can not work out for the life of me why someone would pay that amount of money for this shot??

    What have I missed?

I don't get a lot of art that people pay shedloads of money for.

I wouldn't pay that much but it's a very, very pleasing composition, the perfectly parallel and horizontal lines certainly isn't an easy thing to achieve, either.

It's because it is a photo of the Rhein taken in 1945, and there's not a burning German tank to be seen.

There was a guy who used to be around here who was wise in the ways of such things...

I agree about the composition, but that's a lot of coin for what it is....
Art is always going to be a personal thing I guess.

Now that makes more sense. Probably a little bit of historical knowledge on my part would have given me a better understanding :)

When people have money, and they want something bad enough, stupid things happen...

I like the photo a lot... Do I like it enough to spend that money? No... Do I like it enough that I have copied it to my HDD? Not yet, I'm not at home, but I just might... ;-)

Given it was taken in 1999, they'd have to be very long burning tanks ;)

This info is from the Christies Auction on the lot and I'm still no wiser as to the price

Also makes it more akin to a painting, just on a digital medium.

If one is to take that as a positive.

Which makes the price even more crazy IMO.

Photoshop is great, digital art is awesome but damn!

Actually it makes it slightly less crazy. After all, more work went into it than if he'd just snapped the pic. Value adding, and all.

Would you judge a Monet by an online reproduction? The photo is 1.5x3 metres... I am sure the detail and colour are a bit more captivating in person... If I had money, I'd consider it depending on what else I had in my collection and my mood on the day.

The thing that captivated me when I saw the French Masters last year at zee gallery was just how 3D they were in real life.

Sure, Starry Night looks kinda cool when you see it online or, better yet, in an art book...

... but it positively pops in real life. I was impressed.

The Scream was the same when I saw it in the Munch Museum in Oslo. Ok, so there isn't really THE scream (or THE Madonna - he painted absolutely millions of them, all slightly different), but it's just incredible irl.
