Does anyone know what the rule is in ACT about time frame for P's if you are over 26 and hold a full drivers licence? In NSW we only have to hold P's for 12 months then get upgraded to full licence - is it the same in ACT?

And as a older driver, you can take your Ps off after 6 months too :)

After 6 months go in and have not required to display P plates added. You also get an extra 4 points. Legislation says you don't have to go in but I did as I'd rather not be having a discussion with traffic police. Didn't cost anything to have it added and reprinted.

Why do you hav to display P's when you have a full car licence?

over here in WA you don't have to.

No, you don't get extra points. You can still only accrue 4 points during the year you have your additional provisional licence.

    (Opening another can of worms)

Really! That could have been interesting.

What the hell. From quick read of legislation it says you get 8 points but suspended if you get 4. Now I know what you mean by another can of worms.

You read the wrong part of the legislation. You have to read the part that's about demerit points for ADDITIONAL PROVISIONAL (assuming you do have a car licence as well). It's complex and I read through it a couple of years ago when everyone was arguing about the rules, as is fairly normal on the internet :) I did just check it this morning to make sure I'm still right...

And we don't actually 'have/own' points. You accrue points - you don't have them and lose them. It amounts to the same but sometimes the terminology messes with people's heads too.

The other thing worth noting in this discussion is that while you can accrue up to 4 points in your year of having an additional provisional motorcycle licence, it doesn't matter where those points come from. I almost lost my bike licence by getting speeding tickets in the car.

Yep, there's a distinction between your first provisional licence and subsequent ones, as maadonna points out.

Yep know about the car points counting which sucks but I guess its to stop people from having double the amount of points by driving either mode of transport.

Read it again, well maybe 3 x, 3.4 and 8.2 seem to apply. My head hurts. :) Yep cannot accrue 4 points for an additional provisional licence.

I like to think I have 12 points to loose rather then none and accruing naughty points.

I had a conversation with a mate at lunch today who is coming off his P's next week. He asked if he could go get his license changed over on the day or if he had to wait till the day after.. I said I didn't know because when I came off mine I didn't want to pay the money so I kept my current one that had the expiry on it anyway. Now... he said that he thinks this means I am still on my P's since I never had it removed.. BUT it has the expiry JAN 12 so.. assistance on this matter? Am I still on my P's because I didn't pay for a new one or can I just ride out this one till I need to pay for a new one on renewal?

My understanding of the ACT system is the expiring day is the day it rolls onto your fulls. Then the birthday expiry date comes into affect. I think NSW is you have to go in and get it changed, but a lot of third hand accounts with that one.

See that's what I thought as well! So.. I am going with that one. Never argue with Lucifer.
Just to be sure I think I will give the shopfront a call to be sure tomorrow. Be a little sucky if got pulled over riding my Triumph to find out I wasn't actually allowed to ride it. :)

That is correct about the NSW licences. Basically, unless it says 'R' on the licence you have in your wallet, you're not on your full licence.

So I just spent an hour on the phone talking to Canberra Connect about this. The Date listed on your license is the date the Provisional restrictions expire. There is no requirement to immediately update your license. It will incur a cost to renew your license.
So all is well with the world. I have not been riding illegally.
