When I stopped in to the bike shop in Mitchell I told them I was planning on buying a lams approved 650 for a starter bike and then when im off my learners take the restrictor off for full power.
The guy working proceeded to tell me that it was illegal to take off the restrictor. He said at first he thought it was legal but he checked with the RTA who told them it was illegal. Can someone confirm this for me? Most people had said get a 650 and take the restrictor off once off my learners but I do not want to ride an illegal bike.
    Thanks!

My understanding is that it is not illegal to derestrict a bike. You will affect it's resale value as once you have removed the restriction it can never be converted back to a restriced LAMS compliant bike again.

The other downside is the bike will be no longer LAMS and most likely worth less de restricted if you do decide to sell as you have just cut out your market of buyers for LAMS bikes.

Its not illegal if you go through the correct procedure of notifying the authorities, getting a dealer to do it and all kinds of other crap. It is illegal to simply de-restrict it especially if your still on restrictions.

Honestly a few of my mates said this, up until the point at which they got their full licences. A de-restricted 650 is no slouch but they are nothing like a 600 in line 4 or greater. Economically it is almost better (unless you've trashed your learner bike) to sell it as they are stupidly overpriced and buy a fun non lams bike once you have your full licence. I've ridden a couple of de-resticted 650's and they fell better than a learner bike but they are still only 650 twins. If you want power they are still nothing compared to any 600+ in line 4.

As an example a mate of mine bought his second hand Ninja 650 for ~$7000 at the same time I spent $7000 on my Blackbird. I know which one I'd rather ride.

If there is a way for you to remove the LAMS restrictions on the bike yourself then by all means go for it, especially if there's a way to put it back on before you sell it. Keeping it hush hush of course. That way you get the best of both worlds, an unrestricted bike while you have it and then a LAMS restricted bike when you go to sell it.

    That Binksy said.

Also, I don't know if that is your intention or not, as your post doesn't exactly indicate one or the other.... but...
once you're off your L's you are still restricted to LAMS until you're off your P's onto full license
Beware, if you are involved in an accident while on your L's and/or P's and insurance/coppers find out you took the restriction plate off, your insurance is voided. And you'll probably face a hefty fine.
Just something to be weary of, even if I'm stating the obvious :)

Not sure if thats correct. As he will have his P's for more than 12 months I thought you were un-restricted 12 months after acquiring your P's?
