Haha the interest in bikes was never lost mate, just the interest in being associated with some people on this site.
The KTM is almost back together, once again i am without anywhere to work on it though which is been the main reason its been apart so long. It'll be back together soon though

 

Sweet! You'll have to come out on a ride one day once it's back together seeing as I finally got off my ass and bought a dirt bike!

 

So an up to date list of whats been done since i collected the roo.
-I had the fuel tank fixed up. Re lined it and then had it re sprayed.
-Bikini fairing was fixed up (Unreal job done by CMC) and re sprayed.
-Ive stripped the top end of the engine. Cleaned it all up and given it new piston/rings/valves.
-Rebuilt the brake calipers and given it new pads front and back.
-Stripped and serviced the carbie.
-All new breather and fuel hoses as well as new fuel taps/filters.
-Cleaned up the air box and given it a new air filter.

Things left to do;
-Re-do the suspension. New springs front and back.
-New tires.
-Work on a better air intake system.
-Replace all electrical components and re wire.
-Color code front mudguard and gators.
-Recover seat.
-New bars and levers.
-Source and install choke cable.
-Come up with a new rear guard setup that incorporates pannier racks.
-Make up new exhaust.

That's pretty much it apart from little things here and there. I also want to powder coat the engine but ill wait till i have to pull it out next to do that.

Patrick: Can you reline all the bikini fairing with a layer of fibreglass on the inside to make it stronger?

 

I was thinking about that mate and might still try it but while im sure that would help hold it together im not too sure if it will do much to stop the original plastic cracking again, especially given the worst of it is around the mounting holes.
I'm working on some kind of anti vibration mount for it as well, the aim being to have the fairing kind of sit firmly in place on some bolts and rubber rather than be tightly mounted on as it used to be.

Cheers for that Lurch, just checked their site and they've got an XT Tenere listed as wrecking so ill give them a call tomorrow.

 

So the Tenere finally came out of storage today and is now residing in my new workshop. No time to get settled in though, im just about to start stripping her down for a full electrical system replacement. Ill be re-wiring it from the battery out and replacing all the existing components.
Much needed work as it looks like a few different owners and their dogs have had something to do with the existing setup and its a shamble, shit hanging everywhere and more connectors and tape than i've ever seen on one bike.

Ive already got a good place to go for a starter motor, does anybody have any tips of good shops/websites for new electrical components? (Solenoids, circuit breakers etc)

Ill chuck up a couple of pictures when ive pulled out the harness so you can see im not exaggerating on how bad it is haha!

 

Cheers for that Richard, that's a handy little site. And on a side note, the starter solenoid is well and truly rooted!

So after an afternoon of beer, Def Leopard and pulling bits off and out of the Tenere i have reassessed the situation a little.

Ive decided now it doesn't need a *full* rewire. Just most of it. Everything up behind the speedo and headlights seems untouched and in good condition, and given i need a new headlight assembly (If i can find one) ill just clean up all the plugs and leave it at that i think.

Everything further down is wrecked though. A few plugs fell apart as i touched them, heaps of cable melted into other cable and just general hell in wiring form. The wiring diagram i had which i thought was correct, turns out its not so im on an internet mission to find the right one. Ive got the harness mostly off the bike now so once ive tracked down a few bits and pieces it shouldn't be too difficult to get it all fixed up.

Cheers Richard, but i know its done in by the sound it makes when i try and start it haha, there's nothing overly complicated connection wise so should be easy to replace. Where it hides wont matter as i am converting the old toolbox below the seat to a housing for the electrical components to keep them out of the elements.

Of course you would notice that Blair, unfortunately with my occupation and hobbies nail care is not high on the priority list haha. The shed is getting there, now I've got the workbench and wall in place I've just got a few more things to put in (Neighbor friendly secondary speakers, TV for the cricket, couch, nudie calender etc)

 

As i'm keeping this updated on the more active forums i'm a member of, i thought it might be fun to dig this up and update it as well. Why not? haha

I've stripped the bike down now. As the frame was painted professionally by the previous owner I'm looking forward to giving that a good wash so I'll have a nice clean starting point. The engine is the first focus so everything else is being ignored for now so I don't get bogged down by how much there is to do!

Stripped her right down, old school single cylinder dirt bikes were what I cut my teeth on as a kid so nothing too unfamiliar, although this is my first solo rebuild from the crank up which is a fun to learn experience.
I spent literally 5 hours cleaning all the old gasket goo off of the mating surfaces and then a few hours more cleaning everything up. It was a real mess.
I've had a gasket and seal kit delivered and I popped the old bearings out last night. I'll source some new ones in the coming week and everything else is nicely within spec so far which means once I've got the new gaskets in I can get it painted and put it back together pretty quickly.
