    I'm struggling to get an open NAT on XBL. I went through my router a few months ago and finally got all the necessary ports set open and got it open. Then a few weeks ago, I signed in and it had gone back to moderate. Anyone know why this would have done it itself? I haven't touched anything.

    Is the IP address on your xbox static or dynamic?

    If it's dynamic it's possible that your xbox has been assigned a new IP, rendering your port forwards useless.

    Is that a setting on the router on the Xbox itself?

    I went into the Xbox network config page and it had the IP as 192.168.0.4 so I've set that as the IP on the port forwarding settings on my router, but still no luck.

    It will be on the xbox itself.

    Try setting a manual ip with say 192.168.0.20 (or another free ip), and set your DNS and Gateway IPs to the same IP address as your router.

    delete your exisitng port forwards to your xbox. and create new port forwards using these ports:

    * TCP 80
    * UDP 88
    * UDP 3074
    * TCP 3074
    * UDP 53
    * TCP 53

    Save the settings on the router and power cycle it. Also reset the xbox for good luck.

    If all goes well, this should fix your NAT problem.

    Hmmm, seemed to have fixed (for now). Matching that IP address to what is in the Xbox network configuration seems to have worked. But why would that have changed? Is there a way I can stop it? If I change the IP address in the Xbox it can't connect to the router.

    The most likely issue is that your router leases an IP to xbox. When that lease runs out and the xbox goes to get a new lease, it might not necessarily get the same IP again. This will cause your port forwards to fail.
    By setting a static IP, it means that the xbox will always have the same IP address.

    You should be able to set the static ip as 192.168.0.4 without any issue.

    This video explains how to set a static IP on your xbox:

    Or the other options is (if the router has it) you can set the Mac of the xbox to have a a certain IP, my network runs DHCP but all of my machines & xbox that have port forwards have IP's inside the DHCP range that are set by mac.

    http://www.portforward.com has lost of help for setting up routers, but I could not see the any "XBL" model.

    enjoy

    Don't know about Xbox, but the only way to get an open NAT (Type 1) on PS3 is to plug your ADSL modem directly into the PS3.

    I had a modem which I didn't know was also a single port router (SpeedStream 4200), plus a 4 port wireless router. Meant I kept getting strict (Type 3) NAT, even after I managed to turn the wireless router into just a switch and forwarded ports. Bought a 4 port wireless Belkin ADSL 2/2+ modem router, and got Type 2 straight away, as PS3 is using wireless access. All good for me now.
