The Deflection “Sure—got a helmet? Hop on the back and I’ll take you for a spin.”

The Mechanical Lie “Okay, but there’s some knocking sound coming from the engine. I need to get that looked at first.”

Mañana “Hey, how about next week after I put some new tires on? It’ll handle better then.”

Misdirection “No problem. But first, how about the (local or college sports team)? Think they’re going to make it to the playoffs this year?”

Legal Eagle “Sure. Whoops, I just remembered—my insurance lapsed yesterday. How about after I get it straightened out?”

Papers, Please “I’m still making payments. My bank says I’ve got to see a driver’s license, insurance, certificate of rider training, character references…”

Outta Time “Look at the time. I gotta go. Maybe next week.”

The Direct Approach “I’m really not comfortable letting anyone else ride my bike.”

    The More Direct Approach “No.”

The Even More Direct Approach “What part of ‘No’ don’t you understand?”

Perfectly Clear “If I ever even catch you sitting on my bike, I’ll break your arm.”

    What's your 'excuse' ?

I've had more mates crash my bikes than I've crashed their wives, in fairness.

Odd how quickly heartfelt assurances to fix things fade. Been there, done that.

I had the opposite situation. @MickLC had a small moment on my Monster at a trackday resulting in my bike ended upside down and his collarbone being in more pieces that it needed to be. I had the bike fixed before he'd even had xrays done & he got his missus to transfer me the approximate repair cost while he was getting the assessment done on his collarbone. Gos binned lil'stinky (which isn't my bike) and we spent a few hours picking through his collection of carburettors to repair the busted manifold & make the bike better :).

It's a case of having the right mates, methinks.

I don't normally have to ask too often, people seem to offer me a ride of their bikes without any issues for which I am always grateful :)
Having said that, I would always make sure if anything happened that they wouldn't be out of pocket.

Exactly. I've got a list of people who can ride various things I have and there's others I probably wouldn't offer. Comes back to knowing what'll get sorted if the worst happens.

And, likewise, I've been given a go on lots of other bikes and I'd make sure the owner wasn't out of pocket if anything bad happened too :).

I personally will let about 3 people ride my bike. And they're the people that I know well enought to trust they won't do anything stupid on it.
Everyone else, sorry but no :)

No problem with my 250 (when I owned her), my 650 - only 1 has ridden her while I was gaining my license. The only person now, I would let ride her - doesn't like feet forward so she is safe lol

I seem to be able to have a ride on all my friends bike easy as. There only a machine and there's nothing like getting the opportunity to ride some different bikes on good roads. Stopped swapping bikes as much recently simply because my bike is race pattern.

I actually end up knocking back offers to ride peoples bikes more often than I get shut down trying to swindle a ride :D
