I credit Pete Major's MOST practice after a discovery ride as what got me off my Ls straight after my 3 months was up.

If you can, I second Heidi in strongly advising you that you grab the opportunity next Wednesday

    Hi Everyone,

You may not be aware that the MRA ACT runs discovery rides and MOST practice, no need to be a member (nice though :whistle ).

My name's Pete and I run the MOST practice for the MRA and provide feedback on road craft and a little on rider skills. Heidi has me down to do a practice session next Wednesday at EPIC so the more the merrier. If anyone wants a one - on - one or a group session just drop me a line or give me a call. Phone 0419 866 126 or pete74au@yahoo.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. There are three areas marked out for the MOST in the ACT - Kambah Medical centre parking lot, EPIC behind the grandstand and the cage at the back of Phillip. (EPIC is the best).

It's great to belong to clubs, be they virtual or physical as its the best way to get feedback and improve your skills.

There are moves to align the testing regime between NSW and the ACT as well as the training, not to forget the MRA are pushing to get a couple of moves taken out of the MOST and an assessed on-road segment put in.

    Ride Safe

Thanks Pete - your help will be most gratefully accepted - weekend activities are kinda tough for me with 4 active kids so kicking off a low key evening session made sense...it's jumped out of scope since then lol.

The parlour tricks we need to learn for the MOST don't seem to prove a lot as regarding riding skills but as it's currently the requirement, then having people like Heidi and yourself supporting us is fantastic (not to mention those that came for moral support and the guys that we on hand to offer additional perspective as riders and mechanics).

with approximately 134 000 new riders in Australia in the last 12 months (numbers courtesy of one of the insurance companies), the need to more appropriate testing is needed now and the insight that experienced riders can offer is like gold.... although it'd also be nice of the Middle Eastern Taxi driver that tore through the roundabout on the federal highway costing me the scuff pad on my boot could use some motorcycle driver training too.....

    see you Wednesday :)

    Hi Pizza,

yeah the circus tricks are a pisser and honestly add little value from a road safety perspective since they were designed for a purely naked machine back in the 80's. However, there is only one ring master in town and he calls the tricks. I have noticed that the cone weave breeds confidence if you go with the flow, and it forces you to relax. If you are stiff ;-) then the bike won't move smoothly and you'll stuff up, if you look at the cones, you'll hit them, good lessons but I don't think they should be examined per se.

Remember that all advice you receive is advice, if it makes sense for you and it works then use it, if it doesn't work then either ignore it or tweak it a little to suit your style.

Oh yeah Heidi's cuter than me

    Cheers
    Pete

I totally agree with Heidi and Taco, If you are on your L's you have gotta spend some time with Pete out on a discovery ride or do some MOST practice, Pete is an absolute legend :bow Like Taco I also got off my L's just after my 3 months was up.

Keep up the great work Pete, you are such a credit to the motorcycle community!!

Good to see a fair amount of riders out keen to learn and accepting of advice. BIG thanks to Heidi1 for her taking control and providing a format for others learning. I did my test in Queensland a "long" time ago where it was an "on real roads" test so sorry I couldn't answer your questions on ACT specific requirements re: use of brakes :nooo2 ... But much respect as a fellow long time rider to take the time to offer advice on bike skillz... The more offered now averts tragedy later so R.E.S.P.E.C. T... :cool1!:

I hope the bike feels a little better now with the adjusted chain Road Pizza :ridgy cause I haven't seen one that loose for a fair while  I'z the guy that took over your spanners :whistle . hope we didn't take too much time from your learning!!!! Seriously I'll do a chain inspection of all attendants next week as Heidi has suggested and I'll bring a can of loob too. Low speed technical riding is far more enjoyable and fun when your not dealing with wih the whiplash of the chain (Sorry loonykaz! I didn't realise your chain was that bad either till is was watchin you ride round.) I will fix the zepher chain this weekend Heidi so you can offer up more tips on the wednesday!!! We've been teaching her riding tips for a moth or so (I've been in her ear for longer than that :rockon ) But more bout real road riding and not so much about what is required to pass licences... And your advice was and is greatly appreciated!!!! :bow

But overall - great progress was made by all and keep at it... and please pass it on to the next up and comer's as you all reach Yoda like status

Don't forget tonight's practise, 5.30pm at EPIC. I'll be 5mins late, I always am. I have my chain lube in my bag, so we'll do some chain inspecting while we are there.

Also, Pete Major will be doing the drills, he is HEAPS scarier than me.

Well, another proactice session passes and it was stunning - between Pete and Heidi, I feel confident enough to have a red hot go at my P's but more importantly, I'm thinking about my riding in a different way.

I'm going to book my test for as soon as I can, but after that I'd like to continue the practice sessions with anyone that is interested for a while longer 9unless there is no interest).

Again, everyone is welcome and the assistance from experienced riders will never be rejected.

Thanks for a fantastic session guys - I learned a lot.

You'll find it comes in ebb's and flow's mate... With the nice weather and bikefest having just happened, expect to see an influx over the next 3 months then it'll be quiet for a while again .

Good to hear that you are feeling so confident about it - that really is 50% of the test!! :D

As soon as I get my brakes sorted I'll book myself in too, then practice heaps leading up to the test date. I reckon if I just swing past EPIC on the way home each afternoon and spend maybe 30 mins going over it all I should be sweet.

I was also wondering if on the test day, is it better to practice heaps before the test itself, or to run it through just once or twice, or not at all? I can imagine if you do it heaps before the test you may tire yourself out and fail.
