    Anyone here into fish/aquariums?
Got my first tank here in Australia since I moved here 11 years ago.

It'd be nice to know any local breeders and reliable stores to purchase fish from :)

Already had a look at Bates Fyshwick and Jem Aquatics at Belconnen. I'm just waiting for my tank to settle down the pH level - put some conditioner last night. Currently looking for just freshwater fish.

I haven't kept fish for a decade, but you've mentioned 2 that I wouldn't go near back then (perhaps they've changed)

General condition of the fish & other pets in their stores & lack of knowledge of staff... but that was a long time ago.

Not really "into" aquariums, but a few years back I started an aquaponics system to grow fresh water fish to eat - and of course they produce waste for the nitrogen cycle.

So last year we bought and raised 20 rainbow trout to 600gm to 1kg. Very tasty.... Ive had 50 silver perch now for about 2months. I have two fish tanks, one at 1000L and the other 3000L. The smaller tank for perch then my large one is seasonal (trout for winter, barramundi for sumer)

Oh I nearly forgot, I have a small indoor AP system, 2 goldfish powerz to grow basil in the kitchen.

TBH Every Aquarium should have a grow bed on top of it for its "filter" I mean why waste all those Nitrates - because look at them go!

    From this

to this in just 3 weeks! THREE!!!

    YUM!

Most of the items below all came from the AP system

Here's my latest three month old 25 litre tank.
It's the first tropical tank I've had after having a couple of cold water fish tanks years ago.
I have one Crown Tail Betta (Opie) and I just added a Bristlenose catfish yesterday (name to be decided).
I've just stepped into the 21st century and have had a lot of fun adding clips from my phone to youtube with music..here's one of them..

The next project I'm considering is a heavily planted 250 litre tank which I'll have a few schools of smaller tropical fish..maybe tetras, guppies and some catfish.. :)

The old Neptunes Aquarium in Queanbeyan is now Reptiles Inc. It might be worth checking out. I got 20 cherry shrimp from there, but my betta knocked them off in two days.. (expensive lobster for my fish). It's good for plants, staff are friendy and helpful, and they let me bring my dog in the shop.

Bates Fyshwick staff have been incredibly helpful and informative. I got my betta there and he's doing well. They spend a long time talking with me and giving tips and ideas, and they let me bring my dog in and don't mind when he tries to eat their $260 bubble headed gold fish through the glass.

I live in an apartment at the moment and have a 38L tank. Might get an Oscar when my conditioner settles :)

What's the conditioner for? Just neutralising the chlorine?

I haven't kept fish for about 4 years now but Gem Aquatics in Belco seemed alright and its worth checking out the Aquarium Club (www.cdas.org.au) as on the first Tuesday of every month they do a fish auction. You can stock up for much cheaper than at a commercial store...
Let me know if you are in the market for a 4ft tank?

Nah, my apartment only allows me to have a small tank. Thanks for the offer and the tips though!

Edit: My brother might be interested though, he's asking for the price? :)

$200 - tank is about 5yrs old, used for 1 year, and comes ready to go (filter, light, stand, gravel, ornaments, cleaning gear, etc)
