Some *amazing* shots - its around somewhere in Austria. Took the guy about 12 hrs to build the wing, out of mainly foam and a laminate using just a hot-knife to make some cavities for the electrics...

Watch the HD version if you can...

Plans to do a 15,000ft, 12mile flight soon.

I love the "suddenly - out of Nowhere..." but... After some other threads around here lately.. it made me Smile :) :)

(its a "Ritewing Zephyr" model incidentally... it'll do 130km/h and up to 240 in a dive.... Yes.. I'm checking out the specs ;) ;) ;) )

Full build details here including heaps of pics and a video of the wingspar installation http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1279141

Only dangerous part is $$$ to be spent

I didn't read that thread, yet, just looked at pics. Did it say how much something like that would cost?

Its not that exxy - priciest bit is the remotes and uhf link for the data for the remote piloting, followed by the prop and battery...
But if you cobbled it together over time, it wouldn't work out that much. There is links at the bottom of the first post to all the stuff he used... I'll get it together for ya later...

How much does an 80/20 version of something like this cost? (80% of the awesomeness for 20% of the price) It would be quite fun to get up to some mischief ;)

How is it possible to remote a plane at such distances? I take it the UHF is a different band that your average remote control vehicle does not operate on?

The new contour HD GPS camera has just been released too. Plots the video on a map and includes all the niceties such as speed, altitude etc onto the video. Tempted to get rid of my 1080HD for the new one, would work perfectly for this application.

cept - these guys use much better GPS units, and a seperate OSD because its transmitted realtime to enable you to continue piloting it. The camera bit is cheap and cheerful. The data-link that works over a couple of km's is the killer ;)

The ContourGPS would be good for footage you didn't care for till you returned. It also doesn't do OSD - it maps it on a google-map side-by-side...
