So Jock was alive when the term AFL existed? That he was not. So how could he have a AFL/VFL record.. The only reason is a name change. So the name changed does not mean he participated in anyway shape or form in the new name, so why credit that to him.

Using that same method of records AJS won a MotoGP championship? They sure did win the first 500cc championship in 1949, however there is quite a year gap to 2002 when the MotoGP name was used.

While it is correct, it just sounds stupid.
Might go make some T shirts celebrating AJS 1949 MotoGP championship.

The MotoGP / 500cc championship thing is something you've got a bit arse about. The world 500cc championship was renamed in 2002, but it was the ultimate world championship class sanctioned by the FIM.

The VFL became the AFL, simple as that. People from other codes made it the competition it is today, but the VFL was what morphed into the AFL just like the 500s morphed into the MotoGP championship.

(Otherwise Rossi would undoubtly be the most winning rider in MotoGP, because none of Ago's records would count as they were all 500cc).

At the same time, you can't say "include these, because those players made the competition what it was". My school produced a bunch of great players, but you wouldn't include coaches playing in the school or even the state football league in the AFL stats of national level games coached.

The VFL was the national level competition, and that's why it morphed into the AFL.

what does it matter if he was alive or not ? None of the Collingwood premiership team from the years 1927 to 1930 are alive at the moment - yet that team and those 4 premierships - are still counted as part of the 15 AFL/VFL premierships that Collingwood are credited with ??

Those 4 premierships are most definitely part of the history of the Collingwood footy club. They also form a very significant part of the history of the AFL/VFL. It matters not one little bit that Jock - or any other Collingwood player or coach from back then - was alive or dead when the AFL came into being in 1990. Those records are part of the history of the AFL/VFL. When these older records are referred to, they are always referred to as AFL/VFL records. Because that is the correct description of them.

The example of using MotoGP as an example - is absolutely valid. Yes, when AJS won the first 500 World Championship, it was called something else entirely. It was not known as MotoGP when Rossi won his first world titles either - do you think that these titles don't count because it was called something else when he won those titles ?? Of course they count. The actual 'name' of the series means nothing - all that counts, is that it was the premier class of motorcycle racing - and all records in the premier class count. Same with the AFL/VFL records.

Exactly. The Premier class of motorcycle racing has always been the premier class, regardless of what the FIM or Dorna or whoever - want to call it. Records from the premier class - will always be records in that class. This is why commentators are always gushing about the latest *record* being broken by Rossi or Marquez etc - those records were set decades ago by riders in a totally different era on different bikes on different tracks - the only common denominator being that the racing - was in the recognised highest category of racing in the world.

Same with all VFL records including Carlton's premierships of the early 1900's. Including these in the history of the AFL/VFL is just as legitimate as including Jock McHale's coaching record between 1912 and 1949.

While we are on the subject of records - here is an absolute ripper. Check the AFL page here, for all the details

Dustin Fletcher plays his 400th game tonight, after starting the 1993 season as a 17-year old kid still in high school. Fletch will join Kevin Bartlett and Michael Tuck as the only members of a very exclusive club in the AFL - 400 games played.

Pretty good achievement - especially considering he has missed another 118 games through injury or suspension !!! (Boomer Harvey from North Melbourne is currently sitting on 392 games and should also join the 400 club later this season).

I think Fletch will play another season next year and end up with the overall record - he has to beat Tucky who finished with 426 games over 29 years from 1972-1991. If Fletch plays every H&A game for the remainder of this season - he will end up on 413 games by the end of this season and needs another 14 next year to break the record. His form is still as good as it has always been, more or less - so there is no reason to think he won't be there next year.

Congratulations Fletch on an incredible career. A real gentleman on the field who almost never loses the plot and plays by the rules.

well there you go - Pies looking at a 7-goal deficit at 1/2 time, to turn that around with a 9-goal 3rd quarter.....well it was amazing to watch and I just wish they would play with that intensity every quarter, in every game !! Totally awesome. Roos kicked a trio of quick goals at the start of the last, but the Pies rallied and eventually won the game as they deserved to. Top 4 and looking OK. I am a happy camper ;)

Billy Elliott had another blinder with 5 goals, Fas did his part with 2, Swannie also chipped in with 2 including that strong settler in the last quarter - and another lazy 30+ possession game. What a star he is :thumbsup.gif:. Sidebottom, Blair and Grundy all worked hard as did Witts - who shows some great skills for a big unit.

In other lesser games played this weekend - Swans flogged Carlton in a yawn-fest on Friday night - the only highlight being Goodesy doing his version of the haka, directed at the Carlton cheer squad, Hawks did what they needed to against the Suns, Port regained some form over the Demons, Bulldogs played themselves into some form with a win over the Giants, Tigers had a great win over the Bombers, with the man himself - Dustin Fletcher - subbed out in his 400th.

The only other game this weekend which was worth watching - was the Dockers beating the Crows. Great win to the Dockers who really are premiership favourites at this stage of the season. Saints did what they had to against the disappointing Lions - and it looks like the Eagles should do the job against the Cats ....

For a Pieman - what a weekend !! Great come-back win for the Pies, with Carlton, Essendon and the Cats all losing !!! Sensational :)

Elsewhere, cooma cats flogged by a dirty and grubby goulburn. Piss poor sportsmanship by a number of goulburn players left a bad taste with some cats players. Theres always the next game.

Yeah just shit sledging and grubby play towards our younger players by blokes that should know better who cried foul about it when dished back. They were a country mile in front but continued to play like grubs.

surprised at the lack of Tiger Army supporters all jumping on the bandwagon !!! What a great win that was last night to beat the Dorkers on their own dungheap...a a really good effort. Freo had to run out of form eventually - they have never won 10 in a row and the Tigers stopped them last night from achieving this :) well-played Tiges :thumbs.gif:

Adelaide had a bit of a fright against the Blues - but were always a class above. Sorry to see Judd finish his career with a knee injury - he wont be back from that. Not sorry to see the Blues nailed to the bottom of the ladder though ......it's great to see :lol

Swans always going to beat Gold Coast - just a matter of the margin.

Cats looking like they will towel up the Bombers tonight - Bombers are a rabble. Hopefully the Doggies can get up over Port.....but probably not.

    and in some late-breaking news........

Freo didn't look like a team right from the get go. Cats tonight got a good boost for morale over a drug free bombers.

yeh Freo were right off the boil - it had to happen eventually. Bombers played the Cats into more form........

Great game tonight between Port and Bulldogs - the final score didn't really reflect what an arm-wrestle this game was for the best part of three-and-a-half quarters..........Port kicked away in rubbish time and were also really accurate - Doggies gave it their best shot and are playing better footy than I have seen them play for a few years now.

Well-done to the Kangaroos for giving it to the Eagles yesterday :thumbs.gif: - the Roos are probably the best team outside of the 8 at the moment. They played really tough footy and if they can keep this up, should find themselves inside the 8 within a month.

Giants were always going to beat a lethargic Lions, game got a bit niggly in a few patches......and Hawks never really looked in trouble against the Saints, despite the Saints showing a bit of ticker in this game.

On form you would have to think the Pies will have it over the Demons today - but it depends on which Collingwood side turns up. If they bring the same intensity to this game that they had in the 3rd quarter last week - they should towel the Dee's right up and consolidate a position in the top 4, pushing the Tigers out of the 8 on %.

Stranger things have happened in footy though - 15 years ago today, there was a game where the Pies looked home and hosed at 1/2 time - except for a bloke nicknamed 'The Wizard' - well he conjured up 9 goals in a half, a record which has not been beaten since. Here is the story on that game :)

Shame the Norths game wasn't on TV, I was keeping an eye on the scores but it was nerve wracking in the last bit of the game as they were only a couple of kicks away at most. Really good to see they stuck it out. Go Roos.

well what a rollicking game of footy that was !! Demons played very well in patches - but their backline looks dodgy and when they try to slow the game down, they fuck up big-time. Pies had a few moments as well - both sides kicking big bags of unanswered goals - but overall, the Pies never really panicked and ultimately the class was always going to win the game.

Clokey kicking 7 was a real highlight - he was double-teamed pretty hard after half-time and to still take some of those contested grabs, was great to see. Blairy and Billy Elliott both had great games - but for mine, the best player in the Pies - was Adam Oxley across half-back. He played a really strong defensive game and looked a lot like Maxwell used to - just loose in the backline, reading the play better than any of the opposition forwards and doing a great defensive job.

Happy to see the Pies sitting in 4th at 7-3, next weeks game against the Giants could be game of the round !!! Who woulda thought that....

Very enjoyable game, not for either side but I wanted Tigers to win. They looked better off the ground but until the second half they couldn't finish so good game.
